Died: February 23, 2007Mary M. Spieler, 98, Granville, died Friday 23, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Services were Tuesday, February 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with Father Richard Ball officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery, under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mary Spieler, daughter of George and Margaret (Schwarz) Schmidt, was born January 27, 1909, in Granville. She was raised in Granville, where she received her education at St. Joseph Catholic School. She then did domestic work in the Granville area.
She married Jake Spieler on April 23, 1955, in Granville. They made their home near Granville, where they farmed. They retired and moved into Granville in 1975. Mr. Spieler died February 29, 1984. On February 1, 1995, she entered Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, where she was crowned Valentine Queen in 2003.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville and church Guild. She was an avid sewer and liked to do embroidery work. She loved to watch sporting events on television and especially baseball.
Survivors include several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Spieler; seven brothers, John and Theresa Schmidt, Herman and Betty Schmidt, Bill and Bertha Schmidt, Joe and Bea Schmidt, Al and Violet Schmidt, Leo and Bertha Schmidt, and Clarence and Anne Schwarz Schmidt; and a sister, Rose and Ted Jackson.
