Blanche Steeneck, 95, died January 22, 2007 in Alcester, South Dakota. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2007 at Nathanael Lutheran Church in Alcester; burial will precede the service at 10:00 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 25th at Wass Funeral Home in Alcester with the family present from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Blanche B. (Ericson) Steeneck was born January 22, 1912 to parents Lewis D. and Hannah (Johnson) Ericson in Virginia Township, Union County, South Dakota. She died on her 95th birthday at Morningside Care Center in Alcester, South Dakota.

Blanche attended Ring School and Hawarden High School where she graduated in 1930. Following graduation she entered nurses training for a few months but due to unfavorable conditions, she returned home to assist with housework while her mother helped with fieldwork. Blanche was eager to help anyone in need. She married Edward Steeneck in 1932 and has lived in Alcester ever since. During the war when help was hard to find she purchased her own truck to haul gravel for Alcester City, Township and Prairie Township while her husband did road maintenance and gravel hauling. She went by the name "Gravel Girtie" – the comic strip. Evenings she was cashier at the Barrymore Theatre. For 15 years she was bookkeeper at Great Plains Supply Company until she retired. She was also a part-time clerk at Larsen Drug, bookkeeper at Ron's Feed Supply. Blanche was a member of Nathaniel Lutheran Church and Senior Citizens.

Her husband, parents, three adult brothers; Mylo, Amos, Ivan; one infant brother, Vannard; one infant sister, Inez; daughter, Barbara Livingston and son-in-law, Bruce Livingston preceded her in death.

Those who mourn her loss are three grandchildren; Brenda Sebern and husband David of Golden, Colorado, Kirk Johnson and wife Lu of New Richmond, Wisconsin and Scott Livingston and wife Andrea of Brandon, South Dakota; four great grandchildren, Stephanie and Tara Johnson, Collin and Erin Livingston; two step-granddaughters, Amy Ewald and husband Andrew and Michelle Sebern and husband Steve Partridge, and one step great granddaughter, Aubrie Jane Ewald.
