Ray Downing, a former Hawarden resident, died Jan. 4, 1985, in a nursing home in Oklahoma City, OK. Soon after graduation from high school at Brooklyn in 1926, he came to Hawarden and was employed by Fred Dirks in his hardware store. In 1929 he married Helen Charles of Hawarden.
During World War II, he was employed in the shipyards at Bremerton, WA. He later returned to the Akron area where he was again employed by the Dirks' family and later operated his own plumbing business.

He married Minnie Dirks Harms while in Akron. Mr. Downing is survived by a son, Richard of Indianapolis; a daughter, Lois Calcote of Oklahoma City; a sister, Grace Brodene of Lampe, MO; a sister, Edna Gilberg of Cooperstown, ND; and a brother, George Downing of Charles City.
Interment was in the Brooklyn I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
