Milo J. Probst, 86, Alton, died Sunday, December 2, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen, following a brief illness.

Services were Wednesday, December 5, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, with the Rev. John Vakulskas officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery, with military rites by Floyd Post 200 of the American Legion and arrangements under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Milo Probst, son of Otto and Anna (Konz) Probst, was born September 24, 1921, in rural Alton. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary’s Academy in Alton. He then assisted his father in farming.

He married Tarsella “Sally” Pottebaum on January 2, 1945, in Alton. They made their home near Alton, where they farmed. He entered the U.S. Army on May 7, 1946, and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was honorably discharged May 15, 1947, and then returned to Alton to farm. They retired and moved into Alton in 1986. He had been a resident of Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen since November 28.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton and the St. Mary Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus of Granville, and American Legion Post 200 in Alton.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Probst of Alton; two sons, Gordon and Marilyn Probst of Faribault, Minnesota, and Keith and Jennifer Probst of Alton; four daughters, Eileen and Gary Holzman of Remsen, Claris and Robert Varenhorst of Le Mars, Jane and Francis Hinspeter of Marcus, and Anita and Alex Heyman of Mattawan, Michigan; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Recker of Lismore, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Milo Recker of Worthington, Minnesota, and two sisters-in-law, Dora Probst of Des Moines and Marilyn Probst of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph Probst in infancy, and Harvey Probst; a granddaughter, Gina Hinspeter; a great-granddaughter, Amber Frederes; four brothers, Clarence and Florence Probst, Kenneth Probst, Donald Probst and Rodney Probst; sour sisters, Florence and Tony Frederes, Mercedes “Sally” and C.J. Wolf, Bernice and Vincent Gergen, and Bernadine Recker; and a brother-in-law, Edwin Recker.
