Lois Potter, 81, Sioux Center, formerly of Funk, Nebraska, died Sunday, January 21, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

Services were Thursday, January 25, at Christ Community Evangelical Free Church in Sioux Center, with Pastor Jeff Whitt officiating. Burial was Friday, January 26, at Fridhem Lutheran Cemetery of Rural Funk, Nebraska, with Pastor Gene Layne officiating, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Lois Potter, daughter of Harrison and Euphemia (Norman) Johnston, was born June 20, 1925 in Atlanta, Nebraska. Her mother died when she was 5. She then was raised by her grandmother, Mary Norman in Funk, Nebraska, during the school year and lived with her dad and brother on the farm during the summer months.

After graduating from 12th grade she attended Business College in Grand Island, Nebraska, and later worked at the Air Base in Grand Island in the finance department during World War II. After the war was over she wanted to go to Bible School. She attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago. During this time she met Earl Potter, who also was studying at the seminary. They married in 1948 and she graduated in 1949. While he still was in seminary she worked for Central Scientific in Chicago. He graduated and became the pastor of various Evangelical Free Churches. She was active in church ministries such as teaching, singing, playing piano, working as church secretary, serving as a deaconess and involved in the Women’s Missionary Society. She had such a humble spirit while serving the Lord.

She was a supportive mother to her five children. She always was involved in her children’s school and church activities. Her two oldest children were born while they lived in Chicago. They moved to Nebraska and had two other children, and their fifth child was born after their move to California. The couple lived in California 1956-94, then moved back to Funk, Nebraska. They moved to Sioux Center in 2002.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Potter of Sioux Center; four children, Pauline and Bill Hendley of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Paul and Esther of Sioux Center, Pearl and Robert Knoebel of Palmer, Arkansas, and Priscilla and Tim Durham of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rachel Lois Potter; a son, Philip Potter; and a brother Harold Johnston.
