Pieter Nieuwkoop, 79, Sioux Center, died Wednesday, August 8, at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

Services were Monday, August 13, at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Reverend Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Pieter Nieuwkoop, son of Pieter Willem and Teuntje (DeHaan) Nieuwkoop, was born November 19, 1927, in Drongelen, Netherlands. He attended agricultural college in the Netherlands. He served with the Dutch army in Indonesia from 1947-50. He married Catharina (Renie) Braaksma on June 11, 1952, in The Hague, Netherlands. They immigrated to the United States on December 10, 1952. They farmed first by Ireton and later near Carmel. He also had a crop hail insurance agency and worked as a hail adjuster for Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa for 40 years.

He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center and served as a Sunday School Teacher for a time. He also was a 4-H leader for his sons and an avid woodworker.

Survivors include his wife, Catharina Nieuwkoop of Sioux Center; four sons, Peter W. and Glenda Nieuwkoop of Sioux City, Gary and Trudie Nieuwkoop of Chowchilla, California, Terry and Cheryl Nieuwkoop of Bakersfield, California, and Jack and Julie Nieuwkoop of Manito, Illinois; two daughters, Nancy and Jeff Guenther of West Point, Nebraska, and Tammy and Steve Noble of Sioux City; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Jacobus “Ko” and Annie Nieuwkoop of Drongelen, Netherlands; a sister, Alie Vande Hoef of Rock Valley; and sister-in-law, Alice Baaksma of Veenendaal, Netherlands.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cathy Nieuwkoop; a sister-in-law, Neep Dekkers; and three brothers-in-law, John Vande Hoef, Tjtp Braaksma and Cees Dekkers.
