Maurine A. Niichel, 93, Granville, died Saturday, November 17, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, surrounded by her seven children.

Services were Tuesday, November 20, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with Father Richard Ball officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery, under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Maurice Niichel, daughter of Anton and Martha (Kellen) Kokenge, was born September 6, 1914, in rural Miller, South Dakota. When she was 3, her family moved to Granville, where she was raised and received her primary education at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She received her secondary education at St. Mary’s Academy in Alton. She married Henry Niichel on August 17, 1936, in Granville, where they farmed.

They retired and moved into Granville in 1973. Mr. Niichel died December 22, 1981. She had been a resident of Heartland Care Center in Marcus since October 2, 2007.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville and the church Guild. She was an avid reader and enjoyed nature.

Survivors include five daughters and two sons, Annette and Jim Plagge of La Palma, California, Pauline and Jack Vonderharr of Albany, Oregon, Mike and Joan Niichel of Granville, Carol and Lars Jensen of Nevada, Tom and Karen Niichel of Osage, Bon Mai and Argyl Ullestad of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Linda and Ron Lenz of Remsen; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; two great-step grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a great-great-step grandson; and a special friend and neighbor, Carol Hansen of Hospers.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Germaine Niichel in infancy; a son-in-law, Dick Neal; a granddaughter, Tracey Neal, in infancy; a great-granddaughter, Dena Marie Niichel, in infancy; and three sisters and their husbands, Lollie and her husbands, Clarence “Pat” Van Bergen and Bill Taggart, Jean and Roger Buchtel, and Gen and Ray Erickson.
