Charlie Grant Newman, 101, Hawarden, died Wednesday, April 4, at Mesa Manor Nursing Home in Grand Junction, Colorado, after a three-month decline in health.

Services were Tuesday, April 10, at First Baptist Church in Hawarden, with Pastor Stuart Schreur officiating. Burial was at Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden, under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Charlie Newman, son of Claudius Grant and Belle (Hayes) Newman, was born November 14, 1905, in Greenville, Kentucky. He spent his early years there on a farm and went to school there. As a young boy, his family moved by railroad train to Hawarden, and farmed in the Hawarden area.

He married Myrtle Ericson in 1933, in Elk Point, South Dakota. He was a farmer, trucker and heavy equipment operator during his life. He followed some road and dam construction jobs in the 1940s but always returned to Hawarden and had spent the last 50-plus years there. Mrs. Newman died in 1995.

He was an avid gardener and always enjoyed having the first ripe tomatoes of the year. He will be well remembered for driving his Ford tractor around town in the spring getting ready to plant his garden.

Survivors include his only child, Regina and Mike Kelly of Grand Junction, Colorado; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Newman. He was the last member of his birth family and was preceded in death by his mother, who died when he was only 3 years old; his stepmother; his father; and 11 siblings.
