James Slauson Moen, 64, Alton, died Thursday, November 29, at his residence.

Services will be at noon today (Saturday, December 8) at Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City, with the Reverend David Daumer officiating. Burial will be at Willow River Cemetery in Hudson, Wisconsin, in the spring, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

James Moen, son of Clarence and Floy (Slauson) Moen, was born March 21, 1943, in River Falls, Wisconsin. He was raised in Hudson, Wisconsin and graduated from Hudson High School in 1961. He graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1965, with a major in music education, and earned a master of arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1971. He was employed as a high school band director for 25 years by the Floyd Valley School District in Alton, and was a band and orchestra director for eight years in the MOC-Floyd Valley School District. He was employed in the motel industry in retirement.

He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City, where he served as organist and choir director for 37 years and held several offices. He was an active member of the Iowa Bandmaster’s Association, the American School Band Director’s Association, Sioux County Arts Council and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. He traveled extensively in the United States and to foreign countries. His hobbies included model railroading, motorcycle riding and reading.

Survivors include three sisters, Patricia and Robert Rolfe of Sun City West, Arizona, Sally Swanson of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Jean and Donald Scholl of Hudson, Wisconsin; a sister-in-law, Bernadette Moen of St, Paul Park, Minnesota; 11 nieces and nephews; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry Moen and Richard Moen; and a sister, Mary.

Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Hour Ministries or the American Diabetes Association.
