Mrs. Esther Scholten, age 90, of Artesia, California, formerly of Alton, passed away Friday, January 3, at the La Palma, California, Intercommunity Hospital.

There was a funeral service on Wednesday, January 8, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Artesia. There was a second funeral service on Saturday, January 11, at 10:30 a.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Robert Vander Schaaf officiated. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery, near Alton.

Esther Marie was born March 7, 1912, at Carnes, the daugher of Henry W. and Anna (Stronks) Jansen. She married Lawrence Scholten, and they moved to California in 1952. Mr. Scholten passed away September 28, 1988, in Paramnount, California.

Survivors include her daughter, Salome "Sally" Scholten, of Reseda, California; son and his wife, Larry and Eda Scholten, of Stevensville, Montana; two grandchildren, Garrett and Meredith; two sisters, Margaret, and her husband, Raymond Lubbers, or Orange City; and Ruth Fennema, of Alton; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Jansen, of Alton.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert Lawrence; a brother, James Jansen; and a brother-in-law, John Fennema.
