Died: June 3, 2001 Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Eugene "Gene" Reid 72, of Ireton, died Sun. June 3, at Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls, due to complications following knee surgery.

Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Wed. at Peace Lutheran Church of rural Sioux Center and graveside service was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dan Kordahl officiating.

Reid was born April 30, 1929 in Ireton, son of Charles and Lenora (Vlotho) Reid. He graduated from Ireton High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Forces from July 8, 1948, through July 8 1951, serving in Greenland and Cape Cod, MA. He married Lorene Serck on January 2, 1951, at Peace Lutheran Church of rural Sioux Center. They farmed the Serck farm near Lebanon from 1951 until retirement in 1976. They moved into Ireton in 1979 where he worked for Ireton Rural Water for a short time and helped his friends with farming.

He has been a member of the board of trustees of Northwest Iowa Community College since 1980; active member of Ireton American Legion; Peace Lutheran Church, serving various positions; and enjoyed woodworking, camping, fishing, wintering in Arizona and e-mailing family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Keith and Audrey Reid of Cedar Rapids and Dan and Cynthia Reid of Sioux Center; two daughters and their husbands, Debra Reid and George Berger of Sioux Falls and Denise and Steve Junod of Ankeny; nine grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Marilyn and Melvin Torwelle of Ireton and Thelma and Lynn Walker of Waterville, KS; a sister-in-law, Jaucile Reid of Alexander City, Ala; and a brother-in-law, Jack Ping of Ireton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Darrell Reid and a sister, Helen Ping.
