ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Raymond Lubbers, 90, of Orange City passed away on Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility in Orange City.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Reverend Jonathan Opgenorth officiating. Interment will be prior to the service in West Lawn Cemetery at Orange City. There will be a prayer service at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Raymond James was born on March 1, 1918, at Orange City, the son of John and Allie (Te Paske) Lubbers. He was raised on a farm south of Orange City and graduated from the Orange City Public High School.

On February 14, 1941, he married Margaret Jansen at Alton, Iowa. They farmed near Newkirk, Iowa, for 40 years, retiring to Orange City in 1981. Margaret passed away on July 16, 2007, in Orange City, after more than 66 years of marriage. Also in July of 2007, Ray became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. In December of 2008, he transferred to the Long Term Care Facility.

Mr. Lubbers was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder on the consistory and was a member of various committees. He also served on the board of directors of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Orange City, served on the Holland Township Zoning Commission, was a 50-year member of the Farm Bureau and served as a 4-H leader.

Survivors include his three sons and their wives, Philip and Sherrill Lubbers of Woodbine, Iowa, Paul and Barbara Lubbers of Orange City, and Gordon and Joslyn Lubbers of Iowa Falls, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Michelle (Nathan) Kenkel of Storm Lake, Iowa; Maureen (Travis) Andersen of Kearney, Missouri, Melanie (Adam) Pryor of Woodbine, Iowa, Jill Lubbers (fiance Dustin Thomas) of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Lisa (Jess) Meekma of Omaha, Megan (Rob) Mudd of Ankeny, Iowa, Amanda (Jeff) Martin of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Grant Lubbers of Armour, South Dakota, and David Lubbers (fiancee Natalie Meyer) of Ames, Iowa; 13 great-grandchildren, Ethan, Emma and Grace Kenkel, Kyla and Corbin Andersen, Wyatt, Layne, Brodyn, Jax and Kathryn Pryor, Sophie and Hannah Meekma, and Miles Mudd; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Lubbers of Orange City, and Elizabeth Jansen of Alton; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Anna Marie Kenkel; a grandson-in-law, Randy Francis; two brothers, Edward Lubbers and an infant; and four sisters, Elsie Landhuis, Jeanette Kleinwolterink, Matilda Schoep and June Beal.
