Mary Huisman, 53, Boyden, died Friday, May 18, at her residence.

Services were Tuesday, May 22, at United Presbyterian Church in Boyden, with the Reverend James Burnette officiating. Arrangements were with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Mary Huisman, daughter of William and Barbara (Johannes) Seivert, was born February 1, 1954, in Sheldon. She was raised on a farm near Ashton. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Ashton and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1972.

She married Terry Huisman on June 9, 1972, at Parkview Assembly of God in Sheldon. They made their home in Sheldon until 2005 when they moved to Boyden.

Her first employment was as a waitress at Smily’s in Ashton. As an adult, she had many community service positions, including being a preschool teacher’s aide, a hostess at the Crown Fork restaurant in Sheldon and a 911 dispatcher for the city of Sheldon. She also was an owner and operator of Huisman Aquatics in Sheldon. She was a corrections officer at the Sioux County Sheriff’s Department in Orange City.

She spent her life devoted to the service of her Savior, Jesus the Christ. She was active in her church, where she taught a Sunday School Class and volunteered wherever else she could be used. She also was involved in the community, especially with those in need. She had participated in the Girl Scouts and Teen Scene, as well as at the high school as a chaperone.

She enjoyed raising her children, playing with her grandchildren, playing cards and board games, especially Zuna, baking cookies, raising plants and spending time with her sister, Anita. Her favorite job was being a full-time mother, and she was proud of her three children.

Survivors include her husband, Terry Huisman of Boyden; a son, Benjamin and Katie Huisman of Eaton Rapids, Minnesota.; two daughters, Angela and Eric Burnette of Hartly, and Melissa and Chad Adams of Castle Rock, Colorado; eight grandchildren; her mother, Barbara Seivert of Ashton; two sisters, Anita and E.J. Poss of Omaha, Nebraska, and Janet and Kent Lohrenz of Sheldon; a brother, Daryl and Dana Seivert of Newell; a sister-in-law, Monica Seivert of Sheldon; her husband’s parents, Don and Lynda Huisman of Sheldon; and her husband’s two sisters, Jan Huisman of Coconut Creek, Florida, and Jeri and Mark Postma of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by her father, William “Willie” Seivert; and a brother, Dennis Seivert.

The family requests that all memorials be directed to Operation Serve International (c/o the family), an organization that provides medicine, food clothing, etc., to the poor and homeless in foreign countries. In the near future, a mission trip to Mexico City, Mexico, will be taken in her honor.
