Mr. Elmer Huizenga, age 82, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2008, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, October 25, at 10:30am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman and the Rev. Paul Bakker will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Elmer was born on August 9, 1926, the son of Steve and Tena (Kuik) Huizenga. He was raised in Orange City, Iowa, where he graduated from the Christian Elementary School and the Public High School, and attended Northwestern Junior College.
He served in the United States Army from February of 1945 to November of 1946, attaining the rank of Sergeant. In civilian life, he was a truck driver and managed the American Legion Bowling Alley in Orange City, and then he attended business training school.
On May 19, 1953, Elmer married Helen Alietha Wiersma in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, where they raised their three daughters. In 1954, he began a 37 year career at Northwestern State Bank, retiring in 1991 as vice-president. In Retirement, he assisted at Oolman Funeral Homes.
He was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he served as elder and deacon many times throughout his life. He served on several different boards, including the Christian School, Northwestern State Bank, and West Lawn Cemetery, where he was secretary for several years. He was also a member of the Orange City Saddle Club, enjoying his horses at shows and trail rides.
Elmer and Helen loved traveling to various places with their recreational vehicle, especially to Arizona, where the couple spent the winter months. He loved being with his family and friends, particularly the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His family will always be grateful for the love and concern he showed for all of them; for the fun and laughter they shared, and for the living testimony of his faith in Christ.
Survivors include his wife of more than 55 years; three daughters and their husbands, Rhonda Lynne and Mark Vogelzang, of Jericho, Vermont; Brenda Kay and Philip Dokter, of Sioux Center; and Stephanie Lea and Gregory Wilson, of Chaska, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren and their spouses, along with ten great-grandchildren, Robin Vogelzang and Martí Grau i Segú; Daniel and Jenifer Vogelzang, and son Tyler; Sarah and David Jones, and sons Andrew and Isaac; Aaron Vogelzang, and fiancé Alisha Balmer; Benjamin Vogelzang; Leslie and Nathan Huizenga, and children Justin, Ashley and Logan; Rochelle and John Sapp, and daughter Kaedyn Rae; Steven and Lana De Jager, and children Faith, Connor and Xander; Jonathan De Jager; Miranda Leusink; and Kelsey Ranum.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his sister and her husband, Etta and Richard Gunnink; his nephews, Doug and Eric Gunnink; and a grandson, Lance Cpl. BJay Leusink, U. S. Marines.
