SHELDON, Iowa - Virgil Harold Hofmeyer, 88, of Sheldon, formerly of Hartley and May City, Iowa, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sibley, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Brian Keepers officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Township Cemetery, May City. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home in Sanborn, Iowa.

Mr. Hofmeyer was born July 21, 1913, in Hospers, Iowa, the son of Dick and Martha (Boersma) Hofmeyer. He was raised in the Hospers and Matlock, Iowa, area and attended country school.

He married Geraldine Koerselman in 1936, in Matlock. The couple farmed in the Hull, Hospers and May City areas. While residing near May City, he was employed as a truck driver with Elmer Kraft. His wife died in 1993. He later moved to Hartley and in 1997, he entered Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. He had spent his winters in Texas.

On May 22, 1998, he was united in marriage to Johanna (Kleinwolterick) Van Aalsburg.

He was a member of Bethel Reformed Church and enjoyed golfing, trucking and mechanical work.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Jay and Marie of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter and her husband, Viann and Ron Bents of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a son-in-law, Victor Day of Clearwater, Fla.; a stepson and his wife, David and Meribeth Van Aalsburg of Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Ruth and Larel Bassett and Mary and Nick Brizzi, all of Boise, Idaho; nine grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Eugene and Jeneva of Sheldon.

He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Margene Day; and a sister, Lucille Van Veldhuizen.
Pallbearers will be Maurice Heilman, David, Stephen, Mike and Paul Hofmeyer, Cody Bents, Charles Dohman and Lance Duchenea
