On Tuesday, December 22, after a lingering illness of three months, Mrs. Simon Schat, nee Florence VandeMei, passed away at the home of her son Renald in Maurice. She had reached the age of 87 years, 5 months, and 14 days.

Florence VandeMei was born in Vrowen Parochi Province of Friesland, Netherlands in 1855.

In 1877 she was united in marriage to Simon Schat. Four years later they came to the United States and lived in Chicago for four years. From Chicago they moved to North Dakota. In 1889 they moved to Sioux County.

They were blessed with fourteen children, eight of whom preceded her in death. Mr. Schat also preceded her in death, passing away in 1939.

Left to mourn her passing are six children: Peter of Chicago, Illinois, Herman of Greene, New York, Renald of Maurice, Mrs. John Slickers (Tillie) of Denver, Colorado, Mrs. J. Perkinson (Nellie) of Larchwood and Mrs. Bert Van Steenwyk (Florence) of Denver, Colorado. Also left to mourn her death are 21 grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, December 26, in the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Rev. R. Bronkema officiated. Interment was made in the Orange City Cemetery.
