Joseph Schaul, age 90, of Alton, died Friday, June 3, 1994 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City .

Funeral services were held Monday, June 6, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Rev. Ronald J. Riecks officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Joseph was born July 4, 1903 in Alton, the son of John and Margaret (Manderscheid) Schaul. He was raised in Alton and attended St. Mary’s Academy at Alton. He was a farm laborer in the Alton area. He married Sylvina Klein on June 8, 1931. After the marriage, the couple farmed for several years near Le Mars and Hospers. They then moved to near Alton and farmed until retiring and moving into Alton in 1968. After he retired, he worked part-time for various businesses in the Alton area, including Foreman Self Service Gas Station. Mr. Schaul had been a resident of Heritage House since May 26, 1994.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Rosary Society, Alton.

Mr. Schaul is survived by his wife, Sylvina of Alton; a daughter and her husband, Carol and Henry Otis of Minneapolis, Minnesota; a son and his wife, Gene and Sheila Schaul of Dubuque; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Casey (Henrietta) Navin, and two brothers, Mike and Henry.
