Clara Scholten, 104, of Alton died Thursday, August 25, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars. A memorial service was Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Alton PresbyterianChurch with Ron Brink, C. L. P., officiating. Intermentwas at Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton.

Mrs. Scholten was born on February 19, 1901, on a farm near Newkirk, the daughter of Herman and Susan (Vander Pol) Van Zandbergen. On January 22, 1925, she married Gerrit L. Scholten in Alton. They made their home in Alton, where she was a homemakerand also worked at many varied jobs. She was employed in a grocery store, a drive-in, a drapery shop and in the Alton Public School cafeteria as head cook. In addition, she owned and operated a millinery shop, a cafe and her own drapery business. Her husband died Apr 16, 1973 in Orange City. In later years she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. She transferred to the Franken Manor in Sioux Center and later to the Plymouth Manor Care Center.

She was an active member of Alton Presbyterian Church. As an avid basketball and baseball fan, she supported the area schools. She spent many hours on her hobbies of tatting, crocheting, knitting, embroidering and sewing. She was devoted to her family. She was delighted when people came to visit, either to play cards or just socialize. They usually visited over coffee and tea, served with her delicious homemade chocolate chip cookies or a piece of her renowned lemon meringue pie.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Clifford and Anne Scholten of West Des Moines, Rodney and Colleen Scholten of Le Mars, Beverly and M. G. Waitt of Newbury Park, California, and Jerry and Audrey Scholten of Le Mars; 13 grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and a great-great grandson. She was also preceded in death by a great-grandson; six brothers; and two sisters. The family requests memorials be directed to either the Alton Presbyterian Church or the Plymouth Manor Care Center, in care of Rodney Scholten, 711 West Valley Drive, LeMars, Iowa 51031.
