Very Sad Accident

One of the saddest events that it has been the duty of the Independent to chronicle for many years was the accidental shooting of Guy Roundy, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Roundy of Eagle township, on Friday of last week [March 2], from the effects of which he died the next day. His brother Roy had placed a loaded shot gun in his buggy and driven over home for dinner. After dinner both went out to the barn and Guy noticed that the gun barrel had become spattered with mud and took hold of the muzzle with the evident intention of wiping it off. As he raised the barrel the gun went off and the entire load was discharged through his right hand and into his side. Medical aid was quickly summoned and though everything was done to relieve him, it was of no avail, and he died shortly after noon the next day. His father was in Chicago at the time the accident occurred. Word was sent to him but he arrived a few minutes too late to see his son alive.

The deceased was born in Marshall county, this state, and was 25 years of age. He came with his parents to this county 13 years age, and was recognized everywhere as an exemplary young man.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon and one of the largest funeral gatherings ever held in the city assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and offer their sympathy to the bereaved ones. Rev. Chittendon delivered a very appropriate sermon, after which the Knights of Pythias lodge of this city formed an escort to conduct the deceased brother to Grace Hill cemetery for interment. The lodge conducted the services at the grave. The sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved parents and brothers and sisters in their deep sorrow.

From the Ireton Weekly Ledger, March 9, 1906: County Gleanings:

One of the saddest deaths occurred last Friday about noon when Guy Roundy attempted to take a loaded shot gun from his brother Roy's buggy; the gun in some manner caught underneath the seat and while trying to loosen it the gun discharged and entered his side tearing away almost all of his liver and left lung also four fingers of his left hand. Two doctors were immediately summoned but of little avail, the sufferer died about twenty-four hours later. It brings indeed a sad blow to the family, while his father being in Chicago, Mr. Roundy leaves a sorrowing father, mother, two sisters and two brothers to mourn his early departure from this life. The funeral occurred Tuesday, the remains were laid to rest in Grace Hill cemetery at Hawarden.
