Marie J. Schalekamp, 91, of Mason City died Thursday, April 11, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City.

Memorial services are at First United Methodist Church, Mason City at 11 A.M. Wednesday, April 17, with the Rev. Charles O. Wallace officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Memory Gardens, Sioux Center.

Marie Schalekamp was born August 24, 1904, in Sioux Center to Henry James and Jennie (Vander Linden) Schalekamp. She graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1922. She attended Central College in Pella, receiving her bachelor’s degree and graduating magna cum laude in dramatic speech and oratory debate. She received her master’s degree from the State University of Iowa in 1939.

She taught in rural school at Sioux Center for two years; taught in public school in Essex for seven years; in public school and community college at Red Oak for 14 years; and at North Iowa Area Community College for 21 years; and after her retirement taught part time at Newman High School for four years. While attending the University of Denver, she co-authored a textbook, Communicating Effectively.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the We Serve God Circle, and served on the executive committee of UMW and some commissions in the church until 1987. She was a life member of ISEA and Nea, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Browning Study Club, Monday Club, AAUW (1985 Name Grant Honoree), Toastmistress Club (International Speaker) and PEO Chapter DZ. She was a volunteer for rentals at MacNider Museum, delivered meals on wheels, gave programs at Good Shepherd and taught RISE program at Madison School.

Survivors include a sister, Bernice Bosveld and her husband Lou of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Lucille Schalekamp of Sioux Center; a niece, Mary Schalekamp Post of Hudson, Wisconsin; and nephews Roger Bosveld of Egypt, John Bosveld of Columbus, Ohio, Donald Schalekamp of Des Moines and Bill Schalekamp of Kansas City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William.
