Mr. William J. Schalekamp, 77, of Orange City, passed away Thursday, December 1, at the Marian Health Center in Sioux City.

William James Schalekamp was born September 2, 1906, the son of Cornelius Schalekamp and Wilhelmina Van Roekel Schalekamp. On November 7, 1929, he married Grace Reinders at Orange City.

“Bill” was manager of the Farmers Co-op Gas and Oil Station in Orange City until the 1940’s. He then operated the Sunrise Hatchery, also in Orange City. In 1968 he became head custodian at Northwestern College in Orange City and continued to work there part time until health problems forced him to retire in 1981. In July of 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Schalekamp became residents of the Heritage House in Orange City. Mrs. Schalekamp passed away March 3, 1983.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Russell (Mary) Van Marel of Ames and Mrs. Gary (Myrna) Kreykes of LeMars; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two brothers, Adrain and Marion, both of Orange City.

In addition to his wife, Grace, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Dirk Kreykes; two sisters, Genevieve Kleinwolterink and Leona Brunsting; and brother, Richard.

Mr. Schalekamp was a member of the First Reformed Church of Orange City, where he had been very active in earlier years, serving on the consistory as both elder and deacon and teaching Sunday School and catechism classes.

Funeral services were held Saturday, December 3, at the First Reformed Church with the Rev. Cecil Martens officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery, under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City.
