Hawarden Independent, November 3, 1927

The many friends of Herman Schultz were much shocked and grieved to hear of his death which took place last Wednesday evening, Oct. 26th, at his home two miles southeast of Craig. The cause of his death was pleurisy and pneumonia and he suffered but six days from the fatal disease, although he had not been feeling well for a much longer time. He had only reached the age of 40 years when the summons came, robbing the wife of a husband, the children of a father and the community of a neighbor and friend.

The deceased was born on the farm now occupied by Henry Baack in Reading township, southeast of Ireton. Here he was reared and grew to manhood. He was married to Meda Onken, daughter of Mrs. H. Onken of Ireton, and five children were born to this union, two boys and three girls. Mr. Schultz made his life work farming, which he successfully pursued. He was known as a real progressive farmer, yet exercising the upmost care in all his undertakings. He will be missed in the community where his upright, honest and charitable qualities were known. Besides his wife and children, three sisters and three brothers mourn his passing. Mrs. Carl John of Hawarden; Mrs. H. F. Baack and Mrs. Albert Winterfeld of Craig; William of Armour, SD; Paul formerly of Chester, SD, but now moving to Seiling, OK, and Emil of Craig. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Lutheran Church at Craig and interment was in the Craig cemetery.
