Farr, Mrs. Gertie (Mrs. E. W.) - 1880-1939

Hawarden Independent, November 23, 1939

The funeral of Mrs. Gertie Farr, whose death occurred on last Wednesday evening of which we made brief mention last week, was held from St. Mary's Catholic Church Saturday morning, with Rev. Father Graff in charge. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery here.

Gertrude Doctor was born at LeMars, Iowa on August 29, 1880. She came to this vicinity when but a small child with her parents, the late Mr. & Mrs. M. Doctor, who located on a farm just west of town. The family moved to Chicago in 1892 and spent several years there, returning to Hawarden in 1898. Later she lived in Minneapolis for a time where she was united in marriage to E. W. Farr in 1922. Mr. Farr passing away in 1915.

For a number of years she was employed as a saleslady in a large department store in Sioux City and later at Mitchell, SD. Owing to poor health she was compelled to give up this work and returned to Hawarden to live, making her home with her sister and husband, Mr. & Mrs. A. D. Horton until about two years ago when she went to keeping house for her only son, Warren Farr.

Besides her son, Warren Farr, she is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. D. Horton of Hawarden; a brother, Jacob Doctor of Minneapolis, and a half brother, Peter Doctor of Hawarden and two half sisters, Mrs. Rose Landaker of Los Angeles, CA, and Mrs. Mary Strauch of Chicago.

Mrs. Farr was a splendid woman and was held in high respect by all who knew her and her host of friends in Hawarden greatly regret her death and extend sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
