Hawarden Independent, April 8, 1954

Rev. J. Cupido, 65, a former Hawarden minister, died Monday at his home in Orange City, after a long illness.

The seriousness of his condition was discovered about a year ago while he lived in Hawarden. At that time he sought medical aid at Rochester, Minn. He resigned as minister of the Christian Reformed Church at that time and moved to Orange City, his boyhood town.

Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.

A son of Mr. & Mrs. Albert Cupido, he was born November 3, 1888, at Orange City where he received his early education. He attended Calvin Theological School at Grand Rapids.

The first church he served was at Hancock, SD. He also served at Redlands, CA, a number of years and then had a church at West Sayville, NY, in 1946 he came to Hawarden as minister of the Christian Reformed Church.

After he became a minister he was married to Miss Tillie Berkum of Sioux Center.

Besides the widow, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Porter and Mrs. Gertie Akema, both of Redlands, CA. Both will be in Orange City for the funeral services. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.

Mrs. R. Jacobama of Hawarden is an aunt and Mrs. P. J. Lubsen and Mrs. Jennie Den Hartog are cousins of Mrs. Cupido.

NOTE: His first name is Jacob.
