Feb 12, 1926 Alton Democrat

Jacob Van Oort, one of the earliest settlers of Sioux County, died at his home, in Orange City Monday night from heart failure. He had been to the home of his daughter that afternoon, the N. J. Wielenga place north of Alton, and on his way home his car got mired in the mud and he overexerted himself in getting it out.

Mr. Van Oort was 64 years old. He was born in the Netherlands, coming to this country and to Sioux County in 1872, homesteading 5 miles north and a mile east of Orange City. About seven years ago his family moved to Orange City. For many years he belonged to the Reformed church at Newkirk, of which church he was a deacon at one time. When they moved to Orange City he joined the Frist Ref. church there.

He was married in Sioux County to Miss Minnie Ravesteyn and to them six children were born all of whom survive their father. They are John, O. City; Effie at home, Mrs. Ed Fikse, living on the old homestead; Peter, O. City; Mrs. N. J. Wielenga Alton; Mrs. Adrian Vander Wilt north of Middleburg.

Four brothers and one sister also survive; Wien of O. City; Mrs. A. Vander Wilt Sr. of O. City ; John of O. City; Cornelius of Hotchiss Co; and Johannes of O. City. Mrs. Cornelius Van Oort is now here from CO having been visiting at the home of her father in O. City.

Funeral services will be held form the home at one o’clock and from the First Ref. Church at 1:30 Friday afternoon.

Mr. Van Oort was one of the most prominent of the early settlers of the county who remained. Besides the homestead he bought considerable other land, owning a fine farm north of the homestead and of recent years buying the farm north of Alton from the Muyskens estate. Always upright and honorable in his dealings he was respected by all who knew him, and the family. Bereaved so suddenly of a loved one, have the heartfelt sympathy of all in their hour of sorrow.
