A Sad Death

Arthur Chase, well and favorably known throughout Sioux County, and especially in the northern part, was killed in an accident in New York City. In former years, Mr. Chase had been principal of the Hull academy. He was the son of Rev. J. D. Chase, formerly of Hull. The young man spent the greater portion of his boyhood and young manhood in Hull. He was a graduate from the Hull academy, Iowa College at Grinnell, and also of the civil engineering department of Cornell University of New York.

The unfortunate young man was at work on the extensive tunnel under New York. He and a companion had come to the surface in an elevator car from the work below. The companion stepped off the car when the cable broke and the car plunged to the bottom, nearly 500 feet. His death will be deplored by his many old friends. Supt. W. E. Chase of Orange City, his brother, went to New York to bring the body back. We understand that interment will take place at Weeping Water, Nebraska, beside the remains of his mother, a sister and a brother.

From the Sioux County Herald, December 20, 1905:
Supt. W. E. Chase arrived home from his sad trip to New York on Friday. He found that the accident which deprived his brother of his life was an inexcusable one, but that the tunnel company was exempt from damages under the peculiar laws of New York.

An estate notice in area newspapers in late December 1905 gives his name as Arthur H. Chase, with William E. Chase as the administrator of his estate.
