Sioux Center News, October 21, 1948

Orange City - Mrs. Wm. De Roo, nee Hattie Harmelink passed away at her home in O.C., Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 6 o'clock in the morning; after a lingering illness. The departed was born at Waupun, Wisconsin on Nov. 4, 1869. She came to Sioux County at the age of 4, living with her parents near Newkirk. She was united in marriage to Wm. De Roo in 1894, and lived on a farm north of Newkirk until 1920, when they moved to O.C. Mr. De Roo died 7 years ago. Mrs. De Roo was the last living member of the pioneer G. J. Harmelink family.

Surviving are her children: Minnie (Mrs. Nick Mantel) of Hospers; Gertie (Mrs. Cornnie Mantel) of O.C.; Martha (Mrs. Wm. Vande Broek) of O.C.; and Henry De Roo of Beaver Creek, Minn. There are 14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the home and at the First Ref. Church of O.C. with Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment was made in the O.C. Cemetery.
