Harold Vande Weerd 78, Hospers, died Monday Nov. 10 at his residence.

Services were Thurs. Nov. 13, at First Presbyterian Church in Hospers, with the Rev. Brian Jansen officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery near Hospers, under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Harold Vande Weerd son of John and Hattie (Hulst) Vande Weerd, was born Jan. 12, 1930 in Alton.

He was raised in the Alton-Hospers area, where he attended Floyd Township School and graduated from Newkirk High School. He married Dorothy Van Der Weide on Jan. 17, 1951 in Boyden. They made their home on a farm between Hospers and Alton, where he also operated Vande Weerd Trucking. Mrs. Vande Weerd died Jan. 12, 2001 in Orange City. He married Ruth Reiland Staub on Jan. 15, 2005, in Mazeppa, MN. They made their home on his farm until the fall of 2007, when they moved to Hospers.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Hospers, where he served as a deacon for six years. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, bird watching, watching television and attending church and cattle auctions.

Survivors include his wife; Ruth Vande Weerd of Hospers; five children, John and Darla Vande Weerd of Alton, Shirleen Post of Rock Valley, David Vande Weerd of Hospers, Arlyce and David Kroese of Nevada, and Kathy Jo and Tom Ennema of Hospers; a daughter-in-law, Crystal Vande Weerd of Orange City; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Annetta and Don Lammers of Alton, Harriet and Al Kooiker of Hull, and Tracia and Dick Morren of Beresford, S.D. a sister-in-law Clara Vande Weerd of Bruce, S.D.. He is also survived by Ruth's family three children Richard Staub of Mazeppa, MN. Danny and Virginia Staub of Mazeppa, MN; and Shirley and Jim Perrotti of Mazeppa, MN; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Staub of Pine Island, MN; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and Ruth's mother, Sarah Reiland of Mazeppa MN.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Marie Vande Weerd; a son, Harvey Vande Weerd; two brothers, Bert and Hermine Vande Weerd and Nick Vande Weerd; a sister, Alice Vande Weerd; stepson, Steven Staub; and stepgranddaughter, Heidi Hundorf.

Memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church in Hospers or Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
