Funeral services for John Harmelink Sr. were held Saturday at the home at 1:00 and at First Reformed Church at 1:30 with Rev. H. C. Van Deelen officiating. Interment was in Valley Cemetery. Mr. Harmelink died Wed., May 16, 1951 at his home after an illness of about 2 years.
John Harmelink was born March 1, 1866 at Aalten, the Netherlands. He came to America in the spring of 1880 and settled at Cedar Grove Wisc. He came to Sioux County in 1887. He was married to Jennie Vande Brake in 1889. To this union were born nine children, two preceded him in death, the children, Gerrit of Rock Valley, Bert of Sheldon, Minnie (Mrs. Henry Blankespoor who died in 1919), Priscilla (Mrs. Henry Van Dyke) of Lynden, Wash., Jennie (Mrs. Allen Bonthuis) of Rock Valley, Henry of Colton, S.D., John and Ed of Hawarden. A baby of two weeks old and Mrs. Harmelink passed away on Feb. 5, 1913.
On Feb. 25, 1914, he was married to Jeanette Zwannenburf. To this union twelve children were born, eight of whom survive as follows: Andrew of Fairview, S.D., Frances (Mrs. Ted Kooima) of Rock Valley, Harvey of San Diego, Calif., Dena (Mrs. Mike Hooyer) of Arco, Minn., Minnie ( Mrs. Bill Van Noort) of Chamberlain, S.D., George of Fairview, S.D., Vernon of Pella, Ia., and Josephine of Lynden, Wash. Also surviving him are 42 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Pall bearers were grandsons, John Harmelink, Ben Hyink Sheldon, James Bonthuis, Kenneth Bonthuis, Robert Harmelink, Hospers, and Richard Swier of Colton, S.D.
Out of town relatives were Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Navis, Chester, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Bill Mulder, McCook, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Vande Brake, Orange City, Mrs. William Lammers of Sioux Center, Mr. and Mrs. George De Jong of Colton, S.D., Mrs and Mrs. Albert Burgers , Mrs. John Swier of Colton, S. D., Mr. William Harmelink, Mr. Melford Harmelink, and Mr. Jess Harmelink all of Sheboygan Falls, Wis., Mr. Donald Harmelink of Cedar Grove, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Dorsman, Ames, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Goetch, Hartley, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Richardson, Parker, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Richard Swier and Mr. and Mrs.John Van Lier, Colton, S.D., Mr.and Mrs. Robert Harmelink, Hospers, Iowa. Out of town friends: Mrs. John M. Vanden Berg, Mrs. Joe Sandbulte, Mrs. Sandbulte Sr. of Sioux Center, Mr. and Mrs.Gregerson, Mr. Straner and Mr. Manning of Fairview, S.D.
