Obituary for Henrietta E. Pennings

Mrs. Henrietta Elaine Pennings, age 77, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, August 21, at 2:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Brent Pennings and the Rev. Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.

Henrietta Elaine was born on May 12, 1937, at Alvord, the daughter of Walter and Alice (Ter Wee) Tilstra. She was raised at Inwood, where she attended a country school. She received her high school diploma from the American School in Chicago, Illinois.

On September 27, 1957, she married Clarence Pennings at Inwood. They farmed at Inwood for three years and then moved to a farm at Orange City, where she was a homemaker. She also served as a cook at the Orange City Municipal Hospital for twenty years.

Mrs. Pennings was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where she attended a women’s Bible study. In earlier years, she served as an organist and children’s choir director at the Inwood Reformed Church.

She was also involved in 4-H as a leader, and she enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cooking, making crafts, reading, and babysitting her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of more than 56 years; six children, Rhonda Pennings and Karen Pennings, both of Orange City; Steve Pennings, and his wife, Phyllis, of Stickney, South Dakota; the Rev. Brent Pennings, and his wife, Dianne, of Baldwinsville, New York; Scott Pennings, of Sioux City; and Greg Pennings, and his wife, Janell, of Sioux Center; ten grandchildren, Kendra (Scott) Kamp, and Breanna, Connor, Adam, Aften, Regan, Parker, Colin, Meysi, and Mikaiah Pennings; three brothers and their wives, Garrit and Henrietta Tilstra, of Canton, South Dakota; Kenneth and Mary Tilstra, of Sheridan, Montana; and Merle and Donna Tilstra, of Inwood; a sister and her husband, Marcine and Lloyd Kempema, of Kersey, Colorado; and three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Tilstra, of Sun City, Arizona; Nellie Tilstra, of Sioux Center; and Marilyn Tilstra, of Denver, Colorado.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, twins Marinus and Marvin, John, Rodney, and Elmer Tilstra.

Memorials will be directed to World Renew.
