Obituary for Clarence Kiel

Mr. Clarence Kiel, age 85, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, August 21, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday, at 9:30am, at the CHURCH.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Clarence was born on August 6, 1929, in rural Maurice, the son of John and Marie (Huisman) Kiel. He was raised in the Maurice and Sioux Center areas, attending rural school.

He served two years in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, where he earned his General Equivalency Degree.

On December 19, 1950, he married Myrtle Wierda in Sioux Center. They made their home on a farm west of Orange City, where he spent his life farming and raising livestock. In January of this year, he moved to the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

Mr. Kiel had been a member of the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center, where he served on the consistory as a deacon. He was currently a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served as both an elder and a deacon on the consistory. He was also a member of the Zoning Board and the Board of Adjustments for Sioux County. In addition, he served on the boards of directors of the Sioux Rural Electric Cooperative and the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Orange City. He had also been chairman of the National Farmers Organization.

Survivors include his wife of more than 63 years, Myrtle; four children and their spouses, David and Verna Kiel, of Orange City; Laura and Herb Tarbous, of Piscataway, New Jersey; Ron and Sylvia Kiel, of Sioux City; and Scott and Nan Kiel, of Orange City; twelve grandchildren, Michelle, and her husband, Kenny Swigart; Angela, and her husband, Jim Dekkers; Michael Kiel, and his wife, Cindy; Jonathon Kiel, and his wife, Crystal; Ali and Stephanie Tarbous; Brittany and Erin Kiel; and Jordan, Tyler, Ted, and Colleen Kiel; ten great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, William and Joan Kiel; three sisters, Hermina Hulstein; Mary, and her husband, Henry Addink; and Evelyn Kroeze; and three sisters-in-law, Grada, Edna, and Geri Kiel; Myrtle’s brother, Reynold Wierda, and his wife, Peggy; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille and Freida Wierda.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four brothers, Steve Kiel, and his wife, Henrietta; Ray Kiel; Vern Kiel; and Howard Kiel, and his wife, Marie; two sisters and their husbands, Hilda and Dick Addink, and Kathryn and Arend Wassink; and two brothers-in-law, Stephen Hulstein and Orville Kroeze.
