Mrs. Rhoda J. Green, one of the very early residents of Union County for more than fifty-five years a resident of the Hawarden Community, died at her home in this city at 4:30 last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Green had not enjoyed good health for the past twelve years and several times during this period she had been critically ill. Yet in spite of her illness she always sought to look on the sunny side of life and tried to make the best of an affliction that had been with her for many years. About six weeks ago she became unusually sick and from then on failed steadily until her death.

The funeral service was held at the Associated Church at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. T.H. Harding. A male quartette, composed of E.T. Dunlap, H.J. Shoemaker, Dave Muilenburg and A.C. Henning, with Mrs. Claus Lage as accompanist, sang two hymns and Mr. Henning also sang a solo. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Rhoda J. McGuire was born near Lehigh, Iowa, February 13, 1863, and passed away in Hawarden February 21, 1936, at the age of 73 years and 8 days. When a small child the family moved to a farm near Elk Point where most of her girlhood was spent. In the year 1881 she was united in marriage with William R. Green, who had homesteaded in Union County two miles northwest of Hawarden many years earlier. They immediately went to housekeeping on this farm and continued to make their home there until the death of Mr. Green, which occurred during the summer of 1918. In September of that year she moved to Hawarden and her home has since been in this city.

Mrs. Green is survived by four children, Amos G. Green, Miss Ona Green, Mrs. Guy L. Venard and Miss Minnie Green, all of Hawarden. One son, Oscar Green, preceded her in death on November 15, 1931. She also leaves four sisters, Mrs. May Angle of Ida Grove, Iowa, and Mrs. Emma Pike and Mrs. Mary Pike, both of Elk Point, and two brothers, Edward McGuire of Sioux City and Bert McGuire of Elk Point. A half brother, William McGuire, pioneer Hawarden resident, preceded her in death. She also leaves seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Green was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church in Hawarden and the Order of Eastern Star. She was honored and beloved by many old friends and neighbors who are grieved at her passing.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Mary Pike, Mrs. Emma Pike, Mr. and Mrs. Bert McGuire, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Pike, Carl Pike and Mrs. Ray Scott of Elk Point; Mr. and Mrs. Edward McGuire of Sioux City; Mrs. Mary Angle of Ida Grove; Miss Mabel Green of Sioux Falls, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond.
