Esther Gertrude Hicks, 98, died Sunday, April 18,2004, at North park Senior Living Community. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church in Sioux City. The body was cremated. Interment of the ashes will be held in WestLawn Cemetery, Orange City, under the arrangements of the Greenwood Funeral Home, Cherokee.

Esther was born Sept. 28, 1905, at Orange City, the daughter of Charles L. and Gertrude (Maris) Dyke. In 1919, her family relocated to Iowa City where she graduated from high school in 1922. She received a bachelor of arts degree in music from the University of Iowa. During her junior year he was elected to Mortar Board, the university's honor society for women . Following her graduation, she taught music at Vinton and then was in charge of vocal music education in the Moline, IL. school system.

She married Dr. Wayland K. Hicks on July 5, 1928, at the American Reformed Church, Orange City. The couple resided in Washington D.C., the Panama Canal Zone and Iowa City, before settling in Sioux City in 1934, where her husband established a medical practice, specializing in urology.

Following the retirement of her husband in 1971, the couple moved to Sun City, Ariz., residing there until declining health necessitated their return to Sioux City. During her younger years in Sioux City, Esther was active in music circles which included the Sioux City Concert Course and the Schubert Club. Possessing a fine soprano voice, she was for many years a mainstay in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, P.E.O. and the Sioux City Country Club.

Survivors include three sons, Wayland Jr. and his wife, Donna of Cherokee, Jerry and his wife, Joan of Sioux City and Forrest and his wife, Sydney of Dallas, Tex, five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wayland on June 22, 1998; two brothers, Dr. Lester Dyke and Dr. Cornelius Dyke; and a sister, Grace Treneman.
