Ernest N. Loewen
Ernest Nicholas Loewen, 88, of Sioux City, formerly of Alton, died Saturday, November 13, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux City with the Rev. Richard Francis officiating. Burial was in Nassau Township Cemetery, Alton.

Loewen was born January 20, 1916, in St. Donatus to John and Elizabeth (Heinriey) Loewen. He attended St. Donatus schools. He moved with his family to Alton at the age of 13. He married Gertrude Van Asselt on September 2, 1939, in Alton. The couple made their home and raised three children there. He worked for Alton Rendering Works for 40 years. He moved to Sioux City in 1990, after the death of his wife.

He was an active member and served as a deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sioux City and was a member of the church clippers group. His activities also included helping maintain the building and grounds. He enjoyed supporting youth activities at the church including growing pumpkins for them to use to raise money for their mission projects. He also served as a deacon and elder in the Alton Presbyterian Church. His hobbies included gardening, 'crafts, sewing, woodworking and making photo albums.

Survivors include a daughter, Janice Loewen of Sioux City; two sons, Marvin Loewen and his wife Sally of Blue Point, New York, and Alan Loewen of Sioux City; three grandsons; three brothers, Howard Loewen and his wife Bernice of Alton, Cloud Loewen and his wife Marie of Pinedale, California, and Clyde Loewen of Auburn, Washington; and a sister, Monica Kapelos of Seattle, Washington.
