Darlene Penning, 56, of Remsen, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City after a lengthy illness of cancer and COPD. Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Rev. Timothy Johnson officiated. Burial was at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Granville, under the Direction of the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen .

Darlene was born Nov. 23, 1947, at LeMars, the daughter of Vincent and Florentine (Mousel) Penning. She was raised and educated in the Granville area, graduating from Spalding Catholic High School in 1966. She then moved to Sioux City where she attended Stewarts Beauty College, graduating in 1967. She was then employed at Eastend Beauty Shop in Morningside from 1967 to 1971, at the Hair Boutique in LeMars until the late 1980s and then the Twin Beauty Salon in LeMars until March of 2000, when she had to retire because of health reasons.

She moved to Remsen in 1987 and had been a resident of Embassy Rehabilitation Care Center in Sergeant Bluff since December of 2003. Darlene was an avid bird watcher, enjoyed fishing, her cats and spending time with her two grandsons.

She was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. Survivors include a daughter Kimberly and her husband Christopher Stoos and their two sons, Joshua and Colby, all of Sergeant Bluff; two sisters, Geraldine and her husband Ronald Andersen of Glendale, Ariz., and Marilyn Champion of Lake View; two brothers and their wives, Ron and Diane of Tucson, Ariz., and Ken and Pat of Omaha, Neb; sister-in-law Muriel Penning of LeMars; and brother-in-law Robert Burkard of LeMars. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Lowell in infancy, Dennis and Lloyd; a sister Lois Burkard; a brother-in-law Martin Champion; a nephew and three nieces.
