Alberta Niehus, 87, of Remsen, formerly of Pipestone, Minn., died on Saturday, Jan. 10,2004, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. A funeral service was held on Wednesday. Jan. 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Rev. Timothy Johnson officiated. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Alton under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Alberta was born on April 18,1916, at rural Alton, daughter of James and Kathryn (Arens) Kinney. She was raised in the Alton area and received her education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton, graduating in 1934. She then attended Western Union College in LeMars, obtaining her teachers certificate, and then taught in the rural school system in the Alton and Remsen area.

On June 20, 1944, she married Everild Niehus at Remsen. They made their home near Kingsley, where they farmed. In 1957, they moved to Pipestone, Minn., where they raised their family. Alberta and Everild moved into the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in November of 1996. Everild died on Aug. 28, 2002. Mrs. Niehus was a member of St. Mary' s Catholic Church in Remsen.

Surviving are three sons and their wives, Wayne and Carmen of Concord, Calif., Bill and Allyson of Colorado Springs, Col., and Dean and Annette of Eagen, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Donna Niehus of Pipestone, Minn.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Magdalen Cheboski of Carroll; a brother, Ivo and his wife Mary Kinney of Bella Vista, Ark.; and a sister-in-law Marian Kinney of Alton. Alberta was preceded in death by her parents; a son Don; four brothers, Joseph, Bernard, Robert and James Kinney, Jr.; and a sister Viola Hansen.
