Paul C. Venard, 84, of Hawarden, Iowa died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. Funeral service was Jan. 31 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial was in the Grace Hill Cemetery. The American Legion and VFW of Hawarden conducted military rites. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Paul C. Venard was born May 9, 1919 at Hawarden graduated from Hawarden High School in 1936 and the son of Guy and Ora (Green) Venard. He from Brookings, South Dakota College. He married Mildred Degen Sept. 26, 1942 at Peace Lutheran Church rural Sioux Center. Paul served with the U.S. Army during WWII being overseas for 1 1/2 years. Following the war he was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church.

Paul worked as an accountant with LG Everist in Hawarden. The couple moved to California where they lived for two years before returning to Hawarden in 1948. Paul began working with his father at Lambertson Elevator. In 1959 he purchased one half and in 1969 he purchased the other half of the business. He sold the business in 1989. Paul was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where he held various offices. He was also a member of the Hawarden Kiwanis Club for many years and the Hawarden American Legion. The couple spent several winters in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; a son, Craig of Hawarden; seven grandchildren; a great-grandson; and two sisters in- law, Vi Venard of Sioux Falls, and Pearle Venard of Hawarden. He was preceded in death by a son, Jim in 1974; and two brothers, Raymond and Wayne "Shorty”.
