Wayne D. Vande Pol, 86, died Friday, July 16, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City. Funeral services were July 20 at Hawarden Community Church with the Rev. Doug Baker officiating. Interment was at Grace Hill Cemetery Hawarden. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Wayne D. Vande Pol was born June 1, 1918 the, son of Dick and Etta (Eastman) Vande Pol in rural Ireton. He grew up on a farm and at the age of 16 had to take over the farm after his father's death. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Larson on Jan. 30, 1943 in Ireton. In 1952 they moved to Hawarden where he worked for Harmelink Block and Tile, building silos. He was later self-employed as a handyman until retirement.

Mrs. Kathryn Vande Pol died May 16, 1988. He was united in marriage to Mary Steenhoek on Nov. 10,1991 in Pella. He was a member of Hawarden Community Church and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Survivors include his wife Mary; daughters, Shirley Lael of Pine River, Minn., Linda Waterman of Hawarden, Carol Forslund of Hawarden and Joyce Bakker of Rock Valley; step-son, John Steenhoek of Pella; step-daughter, Joan Aalbers of Elgin, Texas; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eva Zalme of Ireton and Lucille Huckle of Le Mars. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn; grandson, Brian Klemme; and brothers, Louis; John, Arthur and Donald.
