Gertrude Gustad, age 81, of Yankton, South Dakota died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Gertrude was born February 26, 1926 in Alton, Iowa to Walter and Jennie (Smits) Schreur. She grew up and attended school in Alton and then obtained her teaching certificate. Gertrude taught country school in Iowa and 5th grade in Sheldon, Iowa for approximately 12 years.

On June 25, 1957, she married Andy Gustad in Alton. They lived and farmed near Volin, South Dakota and she and Andy raised their five children. In 1999, they moved into Yankton. Gertrude was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a fabulous cook and brought food to many church functions and to her neighbors and friends. She loved watching sports and was always very interested in politics. Gertrude enjoyed doing embroidery work and daily crossword puzzles. She loved playing games with her family, neighbors and friends. Gertrude was a strong woman of faith and was genuinely interested in the lives of others.

Grateful for having shared her life are her 3 daughters: Jeanine (Dave) Reed of Madison, SD, Sandra (Dave) Rooks of Hot Springs, SD and Donna (Steve) Witthuhn of Palouse, WA; 2 sons: Rod (Linda) Gustad of Roanoke, VA and Jerry (Amy) Gustad of Volin; 17 grandchildren; 3 sisters: Geraldine Schreur of Alton, IA, Loretta Carney of Marcus, IA and Joyce (Harold) VanWettering of Hospers, IA; 2 brothers: Arend (Bev) Schreur of Sioux City, IA and Ray (Bev) Schreur of Alton; a brother-in-law, Earl (Verona) Lubben of LeMars, IA; and a sister-in-law, Leona Schreur of Alton.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Andy on February 17, 2004; brother, Robert Schreur; and a sister, Dorothy Lubben.

Funeral services are Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Calvary Baptist Church in Yankton with Reverend Terry Port officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery in rural Volin, South Dakota.

Pallbearers are Ordell Gustad, David Hovden, Dan Kolberg, Adolf Krcil, Alec Solberg and Gary VanWettering.
