Howard R. Pottebaum, 70, of Alton, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Orange City Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. A rosary was held on Monday Afternoon by the St. Mary's Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning May 25 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Rev. John Vakulskas and Msgr. Kenneth Seifried officiated. Burial was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Alton, under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen.

Howard was born June 8, 1933, at rural Alton, the son of Anton J. and Anna (Pick) Pottebaum. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton. He was then a farm laborer in the Alton area. Howard served in the U.S. Army as a medic from Feb. 25, 1954, until his discharge on Feb. 13, 1956. He then returned to farm with his father and also attended agricultural school at LeMars.

On Sept. 7,1957,he married Doris Schwarz at Granville. They made their home in Alton. Inl958hebeganPottebaum Manufacturing and invented "Sowjoy" farrowing crates. He sold this business in 1966, and they purchased their family farm near Alton to which they moved. Over the years he expanded his farm operation and became a well known pork producer, known to many as "Pigman." He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family. Mr. Pottebaum was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Rosary Society and Floyd Post 200 American Legion, all of Alton.

Survivors are his wife Doris of Alton: four sons, Tim and his wife Karen and their children Jennifer, Brian and Brad of Sheldon, Tom of Alton, Mike and his wife Sheila and their children Alex, Megan and Dana of Granville, and Jim and his wife Kris and their children Brandon, Madison and Lauren of Hospers; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Paul Meis and their children Lindsey and Jared of Oyens, and Laurie and Gene Krump and their children Rachael and Brady of Worthing, S.D.; five sisters, Tarsella and her husband Milo Probst and Florence Thole all of Alton, Berdella and her husband Herb Schueller of Primghar, Mary Ann and her husband Art Walker of Lady Lake, Fla., and Donna Rae Krogman of Sheldon: five brothers, Ivan, and his wife Clare of Granville, Eugene of Rock Valley, Dee and his wife Carol of LeMars, Arlin and his wife Marlene of Hospers, and Orville and his wife Mary Ann of Alton; brother-in-law Ambrose Block of Hospers; and sister-in-law Jan and her husband Marv Strouth of Ashton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Bernice Block, a brother Tony brotherin- law Ray Thole and several nieces and nephews.
