Karol Powell, 89, of Rock Valley, formerly of Oskaloosa, IA, died Thursday. June 24, 2004, at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service was 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 28th at Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Services continued at 10: 30 a.m., Wednesday the 30th at Bethel Christian Reformed Church, Oskaloosa with burial following at Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. In lieuof flowers, memorials are preferred to Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Dordt College, Oskaloosa Christian School, or Disabled American Veterans.

Karol Arthur Powell was born November 21, 1914, to Glen and Alta (Guthrie) Powell in Moulton, IA. He attended elementary school in Albia, IA, and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1935. Karol served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army, stationed in Iceland, England, France, and Germany. He was united in marriage to Genevieve Bakker on June 27, 1964, in Wellsburg, I A. Together they lived in Oskaloosa while Karol worked as a nursing assistant at the VA Hospital for 30 years in Knoxville, IA, retiring in 1979. Genevieve died September 13, 1990.

Karol moved to Sioux Center, IA, in 1999 for a short time before moving to Valley Manor, Rock Valley. He was a member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley and Disabled American Veterans. Karol enjoyed bowling, gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include: daughters: Susan (Paul) Van Stelle of Gering, NE, and Kathy (Carl) Fictorie of Sioux Center, IA; 5 grandchildren; sisters: Bonnie (Henry) Vick of Denver, CO, and Helen Bakker of Hubbard, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Genevieve; brother Homer and his wife Martha; sister Iva; and brother-inlaw Manley Bakker.
