Bert C. Haines, a lifelong resident of Hawarden, passed away in his sleep at his home here early Monday morning, apparently from a heart attack. He had suffered from what he believed to be a stomach disorder several days last week and while this did not prevent him from being around it caused him sufficient distress so that he refrained from going to work. Late Sunday night when he became acutely ill a physician was summoned who ministered to him and apparently left him sleeping quietly. When morning came he seemed to be sleeping quietly and his mother did to attempt to disturb him. About 9:30, however, she went to his room and was alarmed at his appearance and immediately summoned a physician but life was found to be extinct. Apparently he had been dead for several hours.

Funeral services were held at 2:15 Wednesday afternoon at the Haines home and at 2:30 at the Associated church, with Rev. T.H. Harding in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

Bert C. Haines, son of Mr.John Haines and Mrs. Mary Haefner Haines. was born June 18, 1890, in the same home in Hawarden in which his death occurred Monday morning. All of his life was spent in Hawarden with the exception of about seven months last year which he spent in California. His father was one of Hawarden's pioneer builders and as a boy Bert learned the carpenter trade under his father's direction and developed into a master builder whose services were always in demand when there was work in the building trade. Following his father's death on April 22, 1919, he continued the contracting business which his father had developed, with the assistance of his uncle, L.D. Haines.

On Februay 14, 1914, he was united in marriage with Miss Edith Nettie DeHarty of this city and they lived happily in their own home in Hawarden until her death which occurred February 7, 1925. Following her death Bert returned to the home of his widowed mother and for the past thirteen years has been the head of the household and chief provider for the home. No comfort or convenience which he could provide for his mother was ever denied and the love and affection which he cherished for his mother was only exceeded by the love and affection which the mother showered on her son.

Bert was the soul of honor in all his dealings with his fellow men. Genial, companionable and overflowing with good humor he bore ill will toward no man and enjoyed the friendship and confidence of all who came to know him. In his early married life he and his wife united with the Congregational church with which his family had been affiliated since the organization of the church in Hawarden. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows, Rebekahs, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Modern Woodmen lodge. He joined the Hawarden fire department in 1916 and continued until his death as one of its most loyal members, being the first active member of that organization to be claimed by death. For a number of years he served as assistant chief of the department.

His sudden death strikes most heavily upon his aged mother, who has been in frail health during recent months. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Russell Younie of Hawarden; and two brothers, Que W. Haines of Hawarden, and Lewis Haines of Sioux City. His uncle, L.D. Haines, who had also made his home in the Haines household for many years, will also feel his death most keenly. In addition, many other relatives and friends will long cherish the memory of this whole-souled, generous-hearted young man.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mrs. Anna DeHarty and daughter Edna, Mrs. George Mise, Mrs. Oscar Albeck, Mrs. Platte DeHarty, Mrs. Myrtle Palmer, Mrs. Gertrude Crawford, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Haines and sons, William and Lewis, and Mrs. F.F. Fogel of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. John Schnoose of Alcester; Mr. and Mrs. Adam Rehden and Mrs. Marvin Rehder and son of Odebolt, and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Otteman of Albert City, Iowa.
