Hawarden people were greatly shocked Saturday morning when they learned of the death of Mrs. Bert C. Haines which occurred in a Sioux City hospital at an early hour that morning following an operation for appendicitis. Few even knew that she had entered a hospital to undergo an operation so they were in no way prepared for the news of her sudden death. Mr. Haines accompanied her to Sioux City last Wednesday and she entered the hospital that evening and submitted to the operation about noon Thursday. Everything seemed to go satisfactorily during and immediately following the operation but Thursday evening a hemorrhage developed and failure to stop the flow of blood was the ultimate cause of her death. In an endeavor to arrest the hemorrhage blood was transfused from the veins of her husband but this effort failed to bring about the desired result and she grew gradually weaker until death claimed her about 2:30 Saturday morning.

The remains were taken to Westcott’s Funeral Home in Sioux City where funeral services were conducted Monday morning by Rev. Steele, pastor of the Mayflower Congregational Church of Sioux City, this service being largely attended. The body was brought to Hawarden Monday afternoon and funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Associated Church, immediately following a brief service at home. The service was in charge of Rev. A. R. Hyatt of Beresford, former pastor of the Congregational Church in this city, and Rev. Edwin Booth Jr., pastor of the Associated Churches. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery. Members of the Rebekah and Royal Neighbor lodges and the Entre Nous Club attended the funeral service in body. The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever held in this city, attesting the high esteem in which Mrs. Haines was held in this community.

Edith Nettie De Harty was born at Climbing Hill, Iowa, November 29, 1893, so was just a little past 31 years of age at the time of her death. She came to Hawarden when about 12 years of age and until her marriage made her home here with her sister, Mrs. L.L. McDaniel. She was united in marriage with Bert C. Haines on February 14, 1914, in Sioux City and they have continued to make their home here. No children were born to them. She was prominent in church and lodge work in this city and was repeatedly honored by being elected to office in both the Rebekah and Royal Neighbor lodges, having held all of the important offices in both orders. In addition she was a member of the Entre Nous Club and the Congregational Church and Ladies Aid. She was extremely popular in social activities in which she was engaged. Her rare good humor and bubbling enthusiasm made her a universal favorite with all her acquaintances and her untimely passing leaves a void in the community which cannot be filled.

Besides her husband, Bert, she is survived by three brothers and four sisters, Oscar, Emmet and Rollie De Harty, all of Sioux City, Mrs. Myrtle Palmer of Sioux City, Mrs. Effie McDaniel of Waubay, South Dakota, Mrs. Marie Balcom of Geneva, New York and Mrs. Elva Harkness of Alcester. In addition she leaves a large number of other relatives and a host of sorrowing friends.

Out of town relatives who were here to attend the funeral included her three brothers and their wives from Sioux City, three of her sisters, Mrs. F.E. Palmer and her husband and two sons of Sioux City, Mrs. Elva Harkness and son of Alcester, South Dakota, and Mrs. Marie Balcom and two sons of Geneva, New York, and the following nieces and nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Platte DeHarty, Mrs. Lloyd DeHarty, Miss Edna Harty, Miss Helen DeHarty, Miss Hazel Deliarty, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Crawford and Leon St. Onge, all of Sioux City, and Mrs. Crawford, also of Sioux City.
