Died: 1917

Last Wednesday night there passed away to her last reward in Reading township one of our oldest residents, not only in years of residence but also in years allotted by her Maker. Mrs. Sarah Jane Hammond was born in Weathersfield, Connecticut, on April 28, 1831. Her maiden name was Stillman. She was united in marriage with William Benton September 14, 1853. They came west in the sixties and lived Minnesota for three years, when they moved to Iowa and homesteaded on the farm adjoining Craig on the south. Some years after the death of Mr. Benton she married Samuel Hammond and has since lived in Reading township, Sioux county. Mrs. Hammond left one son, George Benton, and one step-son, David Hammond. There are also nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the home and interment was made in the Ireton Cemetery. Mrs. Hammond was well known to most of the old settlers of the county. She was known for her hospitality in the early days and her home was one that travelers and strangers, as well as friends and neighbors, could find a welcome at all times. She became a member of the Congregational Church in girlhood and in later life was a member of the Church of Christ, Scientist. We express our sympathies to the bereaved ones.
