Irving J. Hamilton, for many years a well known resident of this community, passed away about 11:30 Wednesday forenoon at his home just northeast of Hawarden, following an illness of long duration from cancer. For several years he had been in failing health and had gradually been growing weaker and the end was not unexpected. The funeral will be held at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon from the home and will be in charge of Rev. William F. Vance, pastor of the Associated Churches. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Irving Jacob Hamilton, son of Ezra and Lydia Hamilton, was born in Orleans township, Montcalm county, Michigan, March 13, 1857, so at the time of his death had reached the age of 66 years, 5 months and 29 days. At the age of 20 years he came west from Michigan and located in Plymouth county, Iowa, where on February 26, 1883 he was united in marriage with Miss Cynthia A. Price, who survives him. Since his marriage, with the exception of two years spent in Missouri, he has resided in this community. He has always been engaged in farming and through hard work and the practice of thrifty habits gradually acquired valuable farm lands lying just outside this city. He always took an active part in community affairs and for many years served as a member of the Buncombe township board of trustees in which capacity he was ever diligent and faithful. Ill health compelled him to give up active farming operations about two years ago but he preferred to remain in peace and quiet on his farm rather than move into town. He was ever regarded as an upright and strictly honorable citizen of the community in which he resided for so many years. Above all else he was devoted to his home and his family and no sacrifices were ever too great where the welfare of his loved ones was concerned.

Besides the widow, Cynthia, he is survived by two sons, Everett W. and James W. Hamilton, both of whom reside on farms close to the home place. The members of the bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of all in their loss.
