JAMES DEN HERDER FOUND DEAD UNDER MACHINE IN FATHER’S FARM YARD; FUNERAL SET FOR THIS AFTERNOON.

A 22 year-old Sioux Center farmer, James Den Herder, was believed to have been killed instantly Monday afternoon when the tractor he was operating tipped over and pinned him beneath.

The young man, who had been out of the Army only a few months and had seen service in Korea, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Den Herder. James was working alone on his father’s farm a half mile south of here at the time and had just finished grinding some feed. He was in the act of moving the tractor on the yard when the left rear wheel struck a stump and pitched it over. The heavy machine came down on the young man’s back.

The accident was discovered by his father, Elmer, who drove onto the yard at about 3:10 P.M. Unable to move the tractor off his son’s body alone, he called a wrecker from town to lift it.

James, who was married and had a year-old daughter, had just finished moving into the farm house across the highway from his father’s farm Friday, the place vacated by his uncle, Alvin Den Herder. He had planned to farm with his father next spring.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Elmer Den Herder home and at 1:30 in the First Reformed Church. Rev. Peter A. De Jong of Leighton, Iowa, will officiate. Arrangements will be under the direction of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home and interment will be at the local cemetery.
A quartet composed of Gerald Bosch, Harold Vermeer, Vernon Mouw and Irvin Mouw will sing “Safe in the Arms of Jesus” and “Beyond the Sunset”. Pallbearers will be Garold Den Herder, Gerald Vreeman, Wilmer Vreeman, Herlan Schut, Richard De Boom and Arvin Schuiteman.

James Leroy Den Herder was born April 1, 1932, at Sioux Center, where he grew to manhood and graduated from the Sioux Center high school in 1950. He attended Northwestern Jr. College one year and Iowa State College one year later, before entering the military service October 14, 1952. He served 14 months in Korea and was released from the Army July 14, 1954.

He was married to Gertrude Schuiteman October 1, 1952, and to this union was born one daughter, Linda Gail.

Besides his widow, daughter and parents, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Roger, Paul, Philip, Mary Lynn and Carol Ann. Also surviving is his grandfather, Gerrit Den Herder and his step-grandmother, Mrs. Gt. Vreeman, both of Sioux Center.
