Gertrude V. Huisman, 81, of Buena Vista, Virginia, formerly of Orange City, died Thursday, January 13, in Buena Vista. Services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiating. Burial was in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City.

Mrs. Huisman was born February 11, 1923, at Alton, the daughter of Herman J. and Hattie (Van Oort) Vander Maten. She was raised at Orange City. On September 26, 1944, she married William H. Huisman at Sheldon. They farmed in Minnesota and then moved to Arizona, where they operated a chicken ranch. They then moved to California, living in Norwalk and Artesia for more than 40 years. He died April 29, 1998, in Norwalk, after 53 years of marriage. In November of 2003, she returned to Orange City, living in the Pioneer Court. Since December of 2004, she has made her home with her children in Buena Vista.

She was currently a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. For many years, she had been an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Artesia. Besides doing church work, she enjoyed playing cards, especially with family members.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Gerald and Carol Huisman of Buena Vista; two granddaughters; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Vander Maten of Orange City, William Vander Maten of Boyden and Herman Vander Maten of Sun City, Arizona; and six sisters, Allie Korver and Harriet Harmelink; both of Orange City, Jenieva Kastein of Rock Rapids, Lucia Vander Ploeg of Hospers, and Hermina Beernink and Kaye Kuyper, both of Sioux Center. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Johannes Vander Maten. Memorials will be directed to the First Christian Reformed Church in
Orange City.
