Bertha Haverhals, 87, of Sioux Center died Saturday, June 25, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley. Services were at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Stephen Rhoda officiating. Burial was Wednesday in Lebanon Cemetery, rural Sioux Center.

Huberta "Bertha" Haverhals was born July 3, 1917, to Adriaan and Clara Johanna (Glimmerveen) Haverhals in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She immigrated to the United States with her parents and older sister on March 12, 1919. Her family eventually settled near Hawarden, where they farmed. As a young woman, she chose to stay on the farm northeast of Hawarden and live with her parents. She helped with the daily chores and provided care as her parents aged. She also worked for area families by doing housecleaning for them. After her mother's death, she and her father moved to Sioux Center in 1951. While living in Sioux Center, she worked in Orange City as a nurse's aide at the Orange City Municipal Hospital. In 1986, she became a resident of Valley Manor Care Center in Rock Valley, where she received the special care she needed.

She was a member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church while living on the family farm. She later transferred her membership to Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

Survivors include two sisters and brothers-in-law, Nellie and Marvin Huenink and Henrietta and Wilbur Huenink, all of Hawarden; a brother and sister-in-law, Severt and Grace Haverhals of Sioux Center; along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
parents; and a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Peter Vos.
