Died: 1954

Jacob E. Den Herder was born November 20, 1872, in the Netherlands. At the age of 17 he came to America with his parents, brothers, and a sister. The family settled in the Sioux Center vicinity. After both parents had passed away, Mr. Den Herder continued to make his home with his brother, Eibert, who is now the only family member surviving.

Four years ago Mr. Den Herder moved to Orange City, becoming a resident at the Pioneer Memorial Home. He and his brother, Eibert, shared a room until November 5, 1954, when the elder brother was hospitalized. Just three weeks later Jacob also became a patient at the Grossman Hospital at Orange City. The two brothers spent the last four days of Jacob’s life together in the same room. Death, due to a heart attack, came unexpectedly at 11:45 P.M., November 30, 1954. He had reached the age of 82 years and 10 days.

He was preceded in death by his father who died in 1891, his mother who died in 1922, by a brother, Beert, who died in 1935 and by a sister, Eiberje, who died in 1951.

Besides his aged brother, Eibert, there are a brother-in-law, Henry Draayer of Hollandale, Minnesota, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Saturday December 4, 1954, at 1 o’clock at the Pioneer Memorial Home and at 1:30 at the First Reformed Church of Orange City where Mr. Den Herder was a member in full communion. Interment took place in the Sioux Center Cemetery. Rev. H. Colenbrander, pastor of the decedent, officiated at the services.
