Smith, Henry - 1860-1945

Sioux Center News, January 18, 1945

Mr. Henry Smith passed away at his home here on Saturday morning, Jan. 13, 1945, after a long illness due to diabetes and old age complications. He had reached the age of 84 years.

Surviving are his wife and eight children namely: Anna (Mrs. Dick Roos) of Hospers; Hattie (Mrs. Albert Backhons) of Sioux Falls, SD; Dena (Mrs. William Vander Brink of Verda, MN; Alice (Mrs. Matty Kokenge) of George; Ralph Smith of California; John Smith of Sioux Center; Truman Smith of Miller, SD; and Ben Smith of Rock Rapids. Also 28 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the Central Ref. Church with Rev. R. D. Meengs, officiating. Burial took place at the local cemetery and acting as pall bearers were Ray Hogan; Henry Gesink; Martin Moeller; Henry Swiers; Gerrit Wandscheer and William Van Velzen.

Mr. Smith was born on June 29, 1860 at Venster Wold Granger and came to America in the year 1886. In the year of 1887 he was united in marriage to Miss Dena Romberg of Alton who now survives him with the children. He was preceded in death by four sons, Henry, Bennie, Peter and one who died in infancy.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith have made their home in Sioux Center for the past 13 years with the exception of one year at which time they lived in Hospers.
